Hong Kong-style mahjong in Singapore: where to play, who to play with

For the table game: four players, real tiles, Hong Kong style — not the solitaire puzzle.

We found 8 places to play mahjong in Singapore and checked each against its own page or a published listing: 5 don't say which style they play, and 3 play the Singapore variant. For a first game, start with ANZA Mahjong — it teaches or seats beginners. Singapore plays its own variant, not Hong Kong style: the same Cantonese base, with animal tiles that pay when "bitten", scoring in tai (台) rather than faan, and a "shooter pays" or "everyone pays" choice set per table. We found no public Hong Kong-style club; most social play is in homes, booked cafe rooms with automatic tables, and members' clubs.

None of these says which style it plays: bring your own rules, or ask before you sit down. Each row links the place itself and the page we read it from, with the date we read it.

Singapore-style tables

These teach or play the Singapore variant (animal tiles, scored in tai). Good places to learn the tiles and meet players; expect different scoring from a Hong Kong table.

House rules you will meet in Singapore

None of the places listed here publishes its house rules online, so ask at the table and agree them before the first hand: the minimum to win, what a discard and a self-draw pay, whether flowers count, and which special hands are allowed. How to agree house rules.

At a Singapore-style table the count itself is different (tai, with animal tiles), so a Hong Kong faan chart will not settle it. How Singaporean mahjong is scored.
