Mahjiku › Questions › How to agree Hong Kong mahjong house rules before the first hand
For the table game: four players, real tiles, Hong Kong style — not the solitaire puzzle.
Settle 7 questions before the first tile is drawn: the minimum, the cap, how faan becomes points, who pays a discard, the self-draw rule, flowers, and what the dealer keeps. Say each answer out loud, or write it down — or pick one sheet on Mahjiku's Create Table screen, where everyone at the table scores by the same house rule and every value can be changed.
One question per line, in the order a table usually settles them. The last column is Mahjiku's default sheet, a reasonable starting point if nobody has a strong view.
| # | Ask | Why it matters | Default sheet |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | What is the minimum to win? | Decides whether a cheap hand is a win or a false call. | 3 faan, flowers excluded |
| 2 | Is there a cap? | Decides what the rarest hands pay. | No cap |
| 3 | How does faan become points? | The count itself, or a half or full spicy curve. The biggest difference in what a night is worth. | the count itself (no curve) |
| 4 | Who pays a discard? | Thrower alone, thrower double, half shot, or everyone. | Thrower pays (出銃) |
| 5 | What does a self-draw pay? | All three opponents pay; some tables multiply it or give it faan. | Each opponent pays once; the self-draw line is worth 0 |
| 6 | Are flowers in? | On or off, and what each is worth. | On · 1 each |
| 7 | What does the dealer keep? | The deal on a washout, and any dealer bonus. | Keeps the deal on a win and a washout; no dealer bonus |
The argument at a mahjong table is almost never about the tiles. It is about a rule two players remember differently. So write it where everyone can see it:
From then on every hand is scored by the sheet everyone agreed to, on a board every player can read from their own phone.
