Mahjiku › Questions › Flowers and seasons in Hong Kong mahjong scoring
For the table game: four players, real tiles, Hong Kong style — not the solitaire puzzle.
Flowers (梅蘭菊竹) and seasons (春夏秋冬) are eight bonus tiles you set aside and replace as soon as you draw them. They add faan to a win but never count toward the minimum. On Mahjiku's default sheet each one is worth 1, a full set of one colour adds 2, and holding all eight is an instant win worth 15.
| Line | 中文 | Default sheet | Half Spicy 半辣上 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flowers | 花 | 1 | 0 |
| Seat Flower | 正花 | 0 | 1 |
| Full Bouquet | 一色花 | 2 | 2 |
| All Eight Flowers | 八仙過海 | 15 | 10 |
| No Flowers | 無花 | 0 | 1 |
The two sheets disagree on almost every row, which is normal. The Half Spicy 半辣上 sheet pays nothing for an ordinary flower but pays for the seat flower — the one whose number matches your seat (1 East, 2 South, 3 West, 4 North) — and for holding none at all.
South wins this hand off a discard holding two flowers, Summer (2, South's own season) and Plum:
| Line the engine found | 中文 | Faan |
|---|---|---|
| Base | 底 | 1 |
| All Simple | 斷幺九 | 1 |
| Flowers | 花 | 2 |
| Total | 4 | |
| Counts toward the minimum (flowers excluded) | 2 |
The total is 4, which looks like enough — but without the flowers the hand counts 2, and the minimum is 3. It cannot be declared. Flowers sweeten a hand that already wins; they never turn a losing hand into a winning one.
Tables also switch flowers off entirely (the tiles are removed before play) — one more line on the house-rules checklist. The tiles themselves: what the flowers are.
