Mahjiku › Questions › Half spicy vs full spicy (半辣上 / 辣辣上) in Hong Kong mahjong
For the table game: four players, real tiles, Hong Kong style — not the solitaire puzzle.
They are the two doubling curves that turn a Hong Kong hand's faan into points. Full spicy (辣辣上) doubles with every faan. Half spicy (半辣上) follows the same curve up to 4 faan and then doubles only every second faan. Same hands, same count — but at the 10-faan cap on Mahjiku's sheets, full spicy pays 8 times what half spicy does.
One payment, from the minimum to the cap. Both are read from the curves Mahjiku scores with.
| Faan | 半辣上 half spicy | 辣辣上 full spicy | Full ÷ half |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 8 | 8 | 1× |
| 4 | 16 | 16 | 1× |
| 5 | 24 | 32 | 1.33× |
| 6 | 32 | 64 | 2× |
| 7 | 48 | 128 | 2.67× |
| 8 | 64 | 256 | 4× |
| 9 | 96 | 512 | 5.33× |
| 10 | 128 | 1024 | 8× |
A full flush won off a discard counts 8 faan on both sheets. Both sheets double the thrower's payment (出銃加倍):
Half spicy keeps big hands exciting without one hand deciding the night; full spicy makes every extra faan count and every big hand decisive. "Spicy" is the players' nickname — 辣 here is a respelling of 勒, "limit". If the numbers feel too big for a friendly table, there is a third option with no curve at all: faan only.
