What's the difference between mahjong and mahjong solitaire?

They are two completely different games. Real mahjong is a four-player tile game of skill — you draw and discard tiles to build a winning hand of sets and a pair, and that hand is then scored. "Mahjong solitaire" is a single-player tile-matching puzzle that borrows the tile artwork and none of the rules, the scoring, or the other three players.

They share nothing but the tiles themselves. Real mahjong is a table game that needs four people, a wall of tiles, and a scoring system; mahjong solitaire is a computer puzzle invented in the 1980s that one person clears alone. Side by side:

If you are looking to keep score for a real four-player mahjong night, that is the game Mahjiku is built for.
