Mahjiku › Questions › How many tiles are in a mahjong set?
A standard set has 144 tiles, but it varies by regional variant — from 136 in Japanese Riichi to 152 in American mahjong.
The most common mahjong set has 144 tiles — three suits of 1–9 (four of each), the honour tiles (winds and dragons), and eight flower/season bonus tiles. But the exact count depends on the variant you play:
| Variant | Tiles | Flowers | Jokers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hong Kong | 144 | 4 flowers + 4 seasons (8 bonus tiles) | none |
| Riichi | 136 | none | none |
| Chinese Official | 144 | 4 flowers + 4 seasons (8 bonus tiles) | none |
| Taiwanese | 144 | 4 flowers + 4 seasons; drawn flowers are exposed and replaced from the wall | none |
| American | 152 | 8 flowers | 8 jokers — wild only in groups of three or more (pungs/kongs/quints), never singly or in a pair |
| Singaporean | 148 | 4 flowers + 4 seasons | none |
