One hand — from deal to a winner — takes just a few minutes. But mahjong is played over a series of hands, and that is what determines the length: A quick session of a dozen hands might last under an hour. A full game traditionally runs a set number of rounds (the deal rotates through all four seats, and often through all four "prevailing winds"), which usually means one to three hours. Taiwanese mahjong tends to run longer per hand, thanks to its bigger 16-tile hands; fast Riichi hanchan or tonpuusen can be shorter. Because it is open-ended, most tables simply agree how many rounds to play — or just play until the night is over.
